Twilight Events
All Twilight events start at 4:30pm and end at 7:00pm
Each event is suitable for parents, children, teachers and others interested in finding out more about the communities in the area around the Open Centre. There will be an opportunity to meet people from different communities and to visit a place of worship.
There is no charge for the event but a donation towards the cost of refreshments and to any place of worship visited would be very much appreciated.
Places are limited so please give us a call or send us an email to make an enquiry or make a booking.
Please contact us for more details or to arrange a booking.
Comment from someone who recently attended a Twilight Event:
"A brief note to say again how much we enjoyed the recent twilight events, we both enjoyed visiting the Hindu Temple, the talk was informative and our questions were answered fully. It was great to have the opportunity to meet other teachers and to talk through ideas about making the teaching of RE in our schools more exciting and meaningful...and did I say we thought the curry was delicious! A very worthwhile experience. Thank you again, I think the Open Centre is an excellent resource for schools and one I'm sure we will be making more use of in the future." Karen Eaton (Brook)

An evening exploring Humanism.
For the first time Humanism, "a non-theist view of life", is now on the Agreed Syllabus for RE for all schools in Derby City and Derbyshire.
What is "humanism?" Is being an "atheist" the same as being a "humanist?" Do you have to join anything to be a humanist? What do humanists think about "creation" and "life after death?" Is it possible to be a moral person without gods, holy books and religions? Are all atheists as aggressive as Richard Dawkins? Should non-believers show respect for ideas expressed by religious people? Do religious people have anything to fear from "the new atheism" or the growth of "the secular society?" Can atheists be blamed for all the ills in society? Should pupils be encouraged to challenge all ideas - even the ideas of their parents and peers? Is it OK to be a non-believer in a community where you are surrounded by believers? Should religions dictate the laws of society? Do religious schools contribute to understanding and social cohesion or are they an example of religious apartheid?
Come along and consider the answers provided by one atheist humanist - and feel free to ask as many awkward questions as you wish. Humanists love questions - in fact they question everything - including their own views!
The presentation will be given by Mike Lake, one of the Open Centre's Trustee Directors.
