Twilight Events
All Twilight events start at 4:30pm and end at 7:00pm
Each event is suitable for parents, children, teachers and others interested in finding out more about the communities in the area around the Open Centre. There will be an opportunity to meet people from different communities and to visit a place of worship.
There is no charge for the event but a donation towards the cost of refreshments and to any place of worship visited would be very much appreciated.
Places are limited so please give us a call or send us an email to make an enquiry or make a booking.
Please contact us for more details or to arrange a booking.
Comment from someone who recently attended a Twilight Event:
"A brief note to say again how much we enjoyed the recent twilight events, we both enjoyed visiting the Hindu Temple, the talk was informative and our questions were answered fully. It was great to have the opportunity to meet other teachers and to talk through ideas about making the teaching of RE in our schools more exciting and meaningful...and did I say we thought the curry was delicious! A very worthwhile experience. Thank you again, I think the Open Centre is an excellent resource for schools and one I'm sure we will be making more use of in the future." Karen Eaton (Brook)

Humanism for individuals and for schools. (Rescheduled thanks to The Great Ash Cloud!)
The Agreed Syllabus for RE for all schools in Derby City and Derbyshire now requires "a non-theist world view" (Humanism) to be covered at all key stages.
In most primary schools, and many secondary schools, RE is not taught by specialists and Mike will provide some pointers about how the study of religion and belief can cover those with and without religious faith.
Humanism is not a religion (it has no supernatural elements: no god and no belief in an afterlife) and it does not require a "faith" - other then putting your fellow humans first in the one life we share together.
Mike will look at the history of Humanism and what it means to the millions of people who are Humanists - but who may not use (or know about) the label!
Mike has been a committed atheist all his life (despite going to Sunday School and attending C of E schools) and he will explain why there is no such thing as "atheism" - if non-believers need an "ism" then Humanism fits the bill.
Come along and ask as many awkward questions as you wish. Humanists love questions - in fact they question everything - including their own views!
The presentation will be given by Mike Lake, one of the Open Centre's Trustee Directors.
